Forensic biology is the intersection of biology and law and deals with evidences that are biological in nature for example, blood, hair, semen, saliva, fiber etc. This multidisciplinary branch of forensic science utilizes the scientific principles and methodology of various branches of biological science like genetics, molecular biology etc. to analyse biological evidence found at crime scene in order to provide meaningful information that can aid in the investigation and resolution of criminal cases.
Biological evidence comes from a variety of origins. It could be of human, plant, or animal origin.
Human based biological evidences includes blood, semen, saliva, vaginal secretions, fecal material, hair, urine, bone, etc.
Plant-based evidence includes pollen, algae, fungus, and diatoms.
Forensic biology deals with diverse types of cases, such as homicide or murder, sexual assault or rape, DNA typing, etc.
